Politicization of Science
“Vaccines save lives — this is an indisputable, well-established, scientific fact.”
–CDC chief medical officer Dr. Debra Houry. She soon resigned, and wrote in a separate email:
“I am committed to protecting the public’s health, but the ongoing changes prevent me from continuing in my job as a leader of the agency.”
At least four other top CDC officials. Three CDC officials who resigned Wednesday were escorted out of the Atlanta headquarters by security, per the New York Times. And there was a staff walkout. Why all the drama?
Because Kennedy’s HHS announced that Trump’s chosen director Susan Monarez was fired for protecting scientific research.
The Washington Post reported that Monarez clashed with RFK Jr. over COVID vaccine policy changes.
Trump issued a statement saying Monarez “is not aligned with the President’s agenda of Making America Healthy Again.”
The termination and subsequent resignations leave the American people vulnerable because CDC lacks leadership; the top ranks of the agency responsible for protecting the nation’s public health is gone. All that expertise out of the door.
Monarez’s lawyers responded that she had neither resigned nor been fired, accused Kennedy of “weaponizing public health for political gain,” and said that his purge of health experts put “millions of American lives at risk.”
“This is not about one official. It is about the systematic dismantling of public health institutions, the silencing of experts, and the dangerous politicization of science. The attack on Dr. Monarez is a warning to every American: our evidence-based systems are being undermined from within.”
